Mostly this week we have been eating swede (we have lots of them at the moment). Allan has been experimenting with swede chips, fritters and gnocchi, which are all delicious.

Swedes have the reputation as a bit of a medieval peasant food but they are brilliant for paleo and low carb diets as they count as a vegetable not a carbohydrate. We love them simply boiled for 20 mins with a few kumara pieces and mashed with oil or butter (a Kiwi twist on traditional Scottish neeps and tatties), or made into a cottage pie with swede as the topping. They're great roasted with herbs and lard from our free range pigs as a treat.
Swedes are pretty easy to grow, I will be selling the seedlings in late spring / early summer if you want to give them a try in your garden. They keep really well in the ground over winter as an eco-friendly winter potato replacement.
